    Get PDF
Two suspected hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) cases from Bolivia were confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. (ELISA)-ANDES was performed using N-Andes recombinant antigen serology in May and July 2000. Clot RNAs from the two patients were subjected to reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing. We describe two characterized cases of HPS. One was caused by infection with Bermejo virus and the other with Andes Nort viral lineage, both previously obtained from Oligoryzomys species. This is the first report of molecular identification of a human hantavirus associated with Bermejo virus

Innovative Thermal Management Concepts and Material Solutions for Future Space Vehicles

    Get PDF
When entering a planetary atmosphere, space vehicles are exposed to extreme thermal loads. To protect the vehicle’s interior, a thermal protection system is required. Future aerospace transportation demands solutions that exceed the performance of current systems and up-to-date material limits. Therefore, new and disruptive solutions must be envisaged to meet those extreme conditions. In the search of new solutions for sharp leading edges of future hypersonic reentry or transport vehicles, the THOR project, composed of eight European organizations (industries, research centers, and universities) and one Japanese Agency (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), is actively working on definition, design, implementation, and simulation of new passive and active thermal management solutions and their verification in relevant environments (high-enthalpy facilities). This paper provides an overview of the recent developments on the four concepts that are targeted in the project, applying different physical methodologies: 1) passive cooling using highly conductive carbon-based fibers, 2) passive cooling with intensive internal radiative exchange, 3) active cooling based on convection heat transfer using a ceramic sandwich/thermal protection system with ceramic foams/lattices, and 4) active transpiration cooling of external surfaces. Details on these thermal management concepts, requirements from end users, and test configurations, as well as results from experimental and numerical verification, are given

This paper seeks to validate the viability of the introduction of a new product called Nutrí Flours. This product is composed of two inputs with high nutrient content, which are flour made from quinoa and flour made from brown rice. Different investigations were carried out in zones 6 and 7 of the metropolitan lime for an-NSE A, B and C. Which allowed us to detect many people who today care about their health and are not being 100% satisfied. Many people comment that they feel heaviness and do not have good digestion for ingested food, since mostly the flours are made of wheat, which does not benefit the health of the client, who feels at times frustration of not leading an adequate healthy life. To carry out this project, an initial investment of S /. 81,575.74, which will be financed purely with the contributions with each of the members. That is, the investment will be 100% covered by the shareholders and no indebtedness will be made with the bank. Which generates a recovery of all the investment in the third year.Trabajo de investigació

21-Hydroxylase gene mutant allele CYP21A2∗15 strongly linked to the resistant HLA haplotype B∗14:02-DRB1∗01:02 in chronic Chagas disease

We previously reported protective haplotype HLA-B*14:02-DRB1*01:02 against chronic Chagas disease in Bolivia. The V281L mutant allele of the 21-Hydroxylase gene, CYP21A2*15, is reported to be located in the Class III region of the Human leukocyte antigen region and linked to the haplotype HLA-B*14:02-DRB1*01:02. The mutant allele might play a primary role in the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas disease in the associated HLA region. We analyzed the frequency of this allele in the same subjects for the previous one. The statistical analysis showed a significant association of the CYP21A2*15 with resistance to severe chronic Chagas disease (OR=0.207273; Pv=0.0041). However, there is no significant tendency of the mutant gene contribution to the resistance after the elimination of the HLA-B*14:02-DRB1*01:02 linked mutants (OR=0.38; Pv=0.1533). Although the frequency of the CYP21A2*15 was small, we found no primary contribution of this mutation to the protection against chronic Chagas disease

Lineage Analysis of Circulating Trypanosoma cruzi Parasites and Their Association with Clinical Forms of Chagas Disease in Bolivia

    Get PDF
Around 30–50% of Trypanosoma cruzi infections in Latin America cause chronic Chagas disease 10–30 years after the primary infection due to lack of effective treatment. The major clinical complications associated with chronic Chagas disease are cardiac myositis (leading to cardiac failure), and autonomous neuroplexus degeneration of the digestive tract that can cause megacolon or megaesophagus. Therefore, there are three major clinical forms of Chagas disease; cardiac, digestive and indeterminate (asymptomatic). The parasites, which can infect humans as well as other mammals, are transmitted by species of triatomines commonly found in the Americas. The parasite is divided in at least six discrete typing units: TcI, TcIIa–e. In humans, the TcI is mainly observed in Central America and northern parts of South America while the TcIIb/d/e is confined mainly to the southern cone of Latin America. We determined which DTU were prevalent in chronic patients in Bolivia, where the three clinical forms and several DTUs of the parasites are present, in order to determine whether there was a link between a particular parasite DTU and a particular clinical outcome. We found a vast majority of TcIId but its kDNA polymorphism showed no association with any of the clinical manifestations of chronic Chagas
